What is resveratrol and what is it good for? Where does it come from and how do we get it? Here you can learn the answers to these questions, as well as the resveratrol dosage found in natural sources.

Knowing that many of my readers have questions about it, I came up with this question and answer format, which I believe is easy to understand.

What is resveratrol from a scientific standpoint?

It is a chemical that exists in plants that are under attack from bacteria, fungi or other disease causing pathogens. It belongs to a group of compounds known as phytochemicals, which in plain English, means chemical compounds found in plants.

What is resveratrol in layman’s terms?

Most of us refer to these chemicals as antioxidants. Antioxidants are standard vitamins like A, C and E. They are vitamin-like substances like coenzyme Q10. In layman’s terms, resveratrol is one of the many compounds that can protect our bodies from the detrimental affects of UV radiation, pollution, oxygen, nitrogen and time.

Where is the compound found?

It was first discovered in a medicinal plant from Japan, known as knotweed root. The root is used to treat bacterial infections.

All red wines contain at least 1.92 mg per liter. Spanish red wines go as high as 12.59 mg per liter. Spanish rose wines contain between .43 and 3.52mg per liter. Spanish white wines contain between .05mg and 1.8mg per liter. White and rose wines from other areas contain a negligible amount.

What is the resveratrol dosage present in grapes, peanuts, berries and other foods?

It depends on where they are grown, but on average, a cup of red grapes (skins on) contains between .24mg and 1.25mg. A cup of boiled peanuts contain between .32mg and 1.28mg.

Unlike the antioxidants found in most plants, the resveratrol content goes up when peanuts are boiled. Most vegetables lose antioxidants during cooking.
